I’ve YouTubed him in the role, and WOW! Pure awesome and not even a little bit creepy.īasically, I’d like to pick and choose my Cabaret cast. (Fun Fact: he is Jennifer Grey’s father.) Alan Cummings played the emcee in the latest Broadway revival of Cabaret. Joel Grey played the master of ceremonies on Broadway several times so he knows the role. My kingdom to see a young Judi Dench as Sally Bowles. (But I’m getting ahead of myself.) Her rendition of Maybe the Time is why I love musicals. Her opening number Mein Herr reminded me of Cell Block Tango from Chicago. Next, to Liza, the male leads look like pale lumps of clay. #CABARET EMCEE MOVIE#Liza was in active addiction during the filming of this movie and I can’t help but wonder if that helped her get into Sally’s character. It is a tragedy that they didn’t give her more songs. She rocks Sally Bowles and her desperation and delusion. The background noise was louder than the dialogue.Īll that said, Liza is the clear star of this movie. The lighting was dark and we had trouble seeing the darker scenes, especially the ones with the Nazis. A lot of important character building and plot is off-screen which makes it hard to keep up with the story. They paired down the score for the movie too. There’s even a subplot in the movie that isn’t in the stage play. There’s a lot happening in Cabaret and it’s hard to keep track. All the while, song and dance numbers interrupt the main story in the cabaret show. Also, the Nazis show up and start beating folks up. Offstage, Max has affairs with Sally and Brian, separately. Baron Max enters from stage left and upends everything. Brian seems unclear about his sexual orientation but starts sleeping with Sally. Brian (York) arrives and takes up residence across the hall from Sally. Sally Bowles (Minelli) appears on stage in epic blue eyeshadow and fake lashes and belts out her first tune. It opens with the emcee (Grey) in stage makeup, which gave us the impression that we were about to watch It. Starring Liza Minelli, Michael York, and Joel Grey.Ĭabaret is set in Berlin in 1931.
